This massive project represents a bold and very public step for the University and its efforts to reduce energy consumption, better manage loads and shift towards renewable sources.

Introducing Curtin University's Living Campus
Curtin University needed a way to show the good work it has been doing on energy reduction and management at its Bentley campus. The University had already adopted a number of technologies to reduce and shift power consumption – including equipment efficiency upgrades, solar panels and its iconic thermal storage tank – but has previously not had a way to state the significant impact these initiatives are having on daily life.
This is where Living Campus evolved. Right from the start, its objective was clear: Showcase real-time and historic electricity usage, and provide education on the many energy initiatives at Curtin's Bentley campus, so anyone can access it – even the public. That way, the data can be used for numerous different purposes, including teaching, research, demonstrating the University's ongoing improvements, and future strategic planning.
Now that the first stage of Living Campus is complete, users can view the data on their desktop computer, mobile device or, in the near future, on large public display panels at either Curtin St George's Terrace or the TL Robertson Library.
How did IBMS help Curtin achieve its goals?
IBMS was brought on board in the early stages of Living Campus for our extensive experience in both consultancy and implementation – indeed, we previously worked with Curtin on its Living Lab building, which received a five-star Green Star Design rating from the Green Building Council of Australia and is now a critical learning tool for engineering students. Our team was hands-on from the start, building the integration platform necessary to connect Curtin's some 1,000 on-campus energy meters and overseeing the development of the new, custom-built user interface.
Our expert team worked closely with the university throughout the whole process, including early consulting, workshopping, prototyping and finally on-site implementation.
What's next for Living Campus?
Energy management is only the first step of Curtin University's Living Campus project. Thanks to the architecture of the system IBMS has created, we will be able to further integrate more systems in the future. Already planned is the addition of thermal water systems, as well as scheme and bore water, natural gas and even people movement.
